feat(doomsday-clock): battle-royale style zone gamemode (#4469)
Resolves Issue #4463 ## Description: An optional game mode that (almost) guarantees a finish instead of letting late-game stalemates drag on. Originally called sudden death, renamed to Doomsday clock Once enabled, every side (each player in FFA, each whole team in team modes) must hold a rising share of the map. A side below the bar is skulled; after a short warn its troops bleed to zero, forcing consolidation to a winner. ### How it works - **Rising zone:** a grace period, then the required share ramps up linearly to each level with 30s pauses between (a battle-royale "zone"). Levels track the ofstats FFA territory median (3/5/10/20/30%). - **Four speed presets** (slow / normal / fast / very fast) change only the pace: normal ends ~30 min, very fast ~15. - **Troop decay:** a linear ramp as a % of max capacity, ~50s from caught to zero (10s warn + ~50s ≈ 1 min total). - **UI:** a HUD panel (live share vs target, wave/decay countdowns, red/orange cues) and an on-map skull above flagged players (blinks in danger, steady while draining). ### Notes for review - Off by default; no effect on existing games. However, as discussed we can add it to the modifier pool for public games to see how popular the gamemode is vs normal play. - Sim is deterministic (integer-only, in `src/core`), covered by unit + integration tests. - One-line addition to `GameServer.updateGameConfig` so the setting survives the host → server → client round-trip. - Status is packed into the existing name-pass data slot (`pd4.w`: 0/1/2 = none/danger/draining); the skull is composited into the icon atlas at load. ### Testing `npm test`, `npm run lint`, `npx prettier --check .`, `npm run build-prod` all pass. ### UI: <img width="243" height="100" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c4c9eeb0-4feb-437d-9aac-b2786a841b74" /> Dropdown between slow, normal, fast, very fast Before zone: <img width="302" height="175" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/7359a1ea-4951-446d-a23c-0711fe06cc5d" /> Zone started, player not affected the pannel also blinks orange for 10s: <img width="297" height="175" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/fcc565a5-d5d0-47a7-97ea-d0ba9d9ad899" /> Player affected, grace period (Danger): <img width="314" height="170" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ff96d21e-96f3-4ef9-8190-48eecc7aac0f" /> Skull icon blinking over player (everyone sees it) - older screenshot, the clipping has been fixed <img width="462" height="145" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/53899211-33b1-40e1-83f2-77f2096f0cad" /> Player affected, grace period ended (Draining): <img width="360" height="159" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4b226d57-da4d-4866-ab5f-db48e4ed1ea2" /> Skull icon no longer blinking, everyone can see you are in a state of decay, and troops are draining: <img width="732" height="146" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/cd10fedb-6e87-4dfc-9fbf-55d3945a7901" /> Skull is visible like alliances icon also on player tab <img width="558" height="81" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/6acdbe91-bdd0-40c7-942b-3990d4dae87f" /> (just UI example, best way to see it is to hop on a solo game and play against AI) ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: zixer._ |

Shrink the per-tick worker → main update payload by ~90% (#4244)
Stacked on #4243 (the `perf:client` harness) — first step of fixing the every-100ms main-thread stutter: make the per-tick burst small before spreading what remains across frames. ## Problem The harness showed the main-thread burst was dominated by `structuredClone` of the `updates` object, and the clone was dominated by two kinds of per-tick churn that re-sent object payloads every tick: - `gold` / `troops` / `tilesOwned` change for nearly every alive player every tick → ~278 partial `PlayerUpdate` objects per tick (world/400 bots), ~508 on giantworldmap. - Attack troop counts tick down every tick → whole `outgoingAttacks`/`incomingAttacks` arrays re-cloned for every fighting player every tick. - `playerNameViewData` (an all-players record) was cloned every tick but only recomputed every 30 ticks. ## Change Three additions to the worker → main protocol (all transferable, zero-clone): 1. **`packedPlayerUpdates`** — `[smallID, tilesOwned, gold, troops]` float64 quads for players whose stats changed. These fields no longer appear in `PlayerUpdate` diffs (first emissions still carry the full snapshot). Gold is exact in a float64 (game values ≪ 2^53). 2. **`packedAttackUpdates`** — `[ownerSmallID, direction, index, troops]` quads. Attack arrays are only resent when membership/order/retreating changes — which is exactly the condition that keeps the patch indexes valid (a tick either resends an array or patches it, never both). 3. **`playerNameViewData` is now optional** — attached only on placement-rebuild ticks (spawn ticks, first ticks, every 30th, spawn end). The client keeps the last applied values; dead players' name placements freeze at death (matching the previous effective behavior). On the client, `GameView.populateFrame` now also rebuilds `names` / `relationMatrix` / `allianceClusters` only when their inputs changed that tick — field presence on a partial `PlayerUpdate` marks them dirty. (`playerStatus`, nuke telegraphs, and attack rings still recompute every tick; they're tick- or unit-dependent.) ## Results (perf:client, this machine; low-end devices ~5–20× slower) Default run (world, 400 bots, 1800 ticks): | stage | before | after | |---|---|---| | clone (serialize+deserialize) | 1.02ms | **0.09ms** | | GameView.update | 0.62ms | **0.29ms** | | WebGLFrameBuilder.update | 0.04ms | 0.04ms | | **TOTAL burst mean** | **1.67ms** | **0.42ms** | | TOTAL p99 / max | 3.47 / 10.3ms | **1.21 / 3.92ms** | giantworldmap/600t: 2.54 → 0.68ms mean. Player update objects: 278 → 6.5 per tick (world), 508 → 12 (giant). The remaining burst is mostly tile apply + per-tick derivations — the part that frame-spreading (next step) addresses. ## Verification - **Sim final hash unchanged** on all three reference configs (`5607618202213430`, `29309648281599524`, `39945089450032050`) — no simulation behavior change. - **View hash unchanged** on all three configs (`942106e9`, `a3aae227`, `cbaaf265`) — the rendered view state is provably identical tick-for-tick, including the name-freeze semantics. - New tests: `tests/PackedPlayerUpdates.test.ts` (drain + GameRunner cadence), packed-channel and freeze-at-death cases in `tests/client/view/GameView.test.ts`, `packAttackTroopDeltas` unit tests and updated diff contract in `tests/GameUpdateUtils.test.ts` / `tests/PlayerUpdateDiff.test.ts`. - `npm test` (1490 tests), `eslint`, `prettier`, `tsc --noEmit` all pass. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Move theme data into the render-settings JSON pipeline (#4223)
**Add approved & assigned issue number here:** N/A — maintainer refactor. ## Description: Replaces the theme class hierarchy (`BaseTheme`/`PastelTheme`/`ColorblindTheme`) with theme JSON files — `default-theme.json` and `colorblind-theme.json` — combined with `render-settings.json` at runtime into a single graphics-configuration pipeline (`settings.theme`). One `SettingsTheme` class keeps the algorithms (color allocation, team-variation generation, LAB-contrast structure colors) and reads all data from `ThemeSettings`; adding a theme is now just adding a JSON file. Colorblind mode (#4150) is fully preserved: - Same palettes — the 32-color CVD-safe pool and Okabe-Ito team colors are baked into `colorblind-theme.json` - The relative border rule (`l × 0.6`) is expressed as a `borderLightnessScale` knob alongside the default theme's absolute `borderDarken` - The mid-game re-theme wiring (`refreshPlayerColors`/`refreshPalette`) and the affiliation/friend-foe tint overrides are unchanged; `applyGraphicsOverrides` now also swaps the `settings.theme` slice - `deepAssign` replaces arrays wholesale so differing palette lengths survive theme switches Verified against the previous implementation with an equivalence test (since removed): default-theme colors are byte-identical including allocation order; colorblind team/derived colors are byte-identical, and FFA assignment may permute within the same palette (hex baking rounds upstream's fractional-RGB colord objects, which can flip the allocator's greedy delta-E ordering — rendered colors round identically either way). Also removes dead theme surface (`terrainColor`, `backgroundColor`, `falloutColor`, `font`, `textColor`, spawn-highlight variants, `PastelThemeDark`) — GL terrain colors and dark mode were already handled in the renderer. Note this means the colorblind terrain bands from #4150 were dead code (nothing calls `terrainColor`; GL terrain comes from `ColorUtils.encodeTerrainTile`); wiring CVD-safe terrain into the terrain texture would be a follow-up. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates — N/A, no UI changes (verified color-identical) - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file — N/A, no user-visible text - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory — `tests/Colors.test.ts` updated for the new pipeline (team colors from theme JSON, colorblind palette/border tests) ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: evanpelle 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Feature/Move theme system from core to client-side ThemeProvider (#4108)
**Add approved & assigned issue number here:** Resolves #2549 ## Description: Themes are purely for the client's rendering, and the server doesn't need context on them. This PR moves `Theme.ts` from `src/core/configuration` to `src/client/theme` and moves affiliation colors to `render-settings.json`. This is to support the ability to add additional themes more quickly, such as colorblind-friendly themes. No visible changes occur from this refactor. ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: jetaviz --------- Co-authored-by: Josh Harris <josh@wickedsick.com> |

refactor: share renderer state shapes between game and WebGL renderer
PlayerView/UnitView now wrap renderer-shaped state objects (PlayerState, PlayerStatic, UnitState) directly instead of holding engine wire types. GameView owns a long-lived FrameData object kept in sync each tick: players/units/tiles/trail/railroad are mutated in place; derived buffers (playerStatus, relationMatrix, allianceClusters, nukeTelegraphs, attackRings) and events are recomputed in a final populateFrame() pass. The renderer reads gameView.frameData() and the same byte-identical state objects PlayerView/UnitView wrap. WebGLFrameBuilder shrinks from ~270 to ~70 LOC: palette management + a single uploadFrameData() call, no per-frame UnitState allocation on the hot path. Wiring: maxPlayers=1024 on RendererConfig (pre-sizes NamePass/palette/ relation matrix textures); NamePass disabled so HTML NameLayer remains the only on-screen player names. Also: 39 new tests covering PlayerView/GameView/FrameData behavior; replace .data field access in three layer call sites with accessor methods (betrayals(), type(), getTraitorRemainingTicks()). |

refactor: collapse per-env Configs into ClientEnv + ServerEnv (#3906)
## Description: This is a refactor to simplify config handling. Replaces the per-environment DevConfig/PreprodConfig/ProdConfig class hierarchy with two static classes: ClientEnv (browser main thread, reads from window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG) and ServerEnv (Node server, reads from process.env). The four config classes are deleted, the abstract DefaultServerConfig is gone, and DefaultConfig is renamed to Config. The values that flow server → client (gameEnv, numWorkers, turnstileSiteKey, jwtAudience, instanceId) used to be baked into the hardcoded per-env classes. They're now real env vars on the server, embedded into a single window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG object in index.html at request time (alongside the existing gitCommit/assetManifest/cdnBase globals, which moved into the same object), and read back by ClientEnv on the client. The dev defaults previously hidden inside DevServerConfig are now explicit in start:server-dev (NUM_WORKERS=2, TURNSTILE_SITE_KEY=1x..., JWT_AUDIENCE=localhost, etc.) and in vite.config.ts's html plugin inject.data. Production deploys plumb NUM_WORKERS and TURNSTILE_SITE_KEY through deploy.yml (GitHub vars) into the remote env file; JWT_AUDIENCE is derived from DOMAIN in deploy.sh. The dynamic /api/instance endpoint is gone — INSTANCE_ID rides along in BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG now. ServerEnv is the only thing server code touches; ClientEnv is browser-only. The two classes have intentional overlap (env, numWorkers, jwtIssuer, gameCreationRate, workerIndex, etc.) since they derive identical logic from different sources — there's a TODO in each to consolidate via a shared helper later. The game-logic Config no longer stores a ServerConfig/ClientEnv reference and its serverConfig() getter is gone; the one caller (MultiTabModal) now reads ClientEnv.env() directly. Worker init no longer carries server-config values since nothing in the worker actually reads them. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: evan |

feat: remove spawn timer on singleplayer (#3199)
Resolves #1041 ## Description: Remove the singleplayer spawn countdown so the game starts when the player spawns, spawn nations immediately after player spawn, and align game timer/max-timer timing with the new start point. Added a singleplayer regression test for spawn-immunity timing (GameImpl.test.ts) and updated spawn-phase loop tests to use gameType: GameType.Public where singleplayer behavior is not under test (e.g. MIRV/AI/Spawn/WinCheck-related suites), eliminating inSpawnPhase() timeout hangs after the new singleplayer start logic. https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c07a585f-1153-490e-88ca-a91fc7ae5756 ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: aotumuri |

Move turnstile check to api (#3845)
## Description
Re-enables Turnstile verification (was temporarily disabled in v31 to
diagnose intermittent `invalid-input-response` rejections) and moves the
verification call off the game servers.
Game servers no longer hold `TURNSTILE_SECRET_KEY` or hit
`challenges.cloudflare.com` directly. Instead they POST to
`${jwtIssuer}/turnstile` on the api-worker (authenticated with the
existing `apiKey`), which holds the secret and proxies to Cloudflare.
Shrinks blast radius and removes the secret from every game host + GH
Actions workflow.
Response from the api-worker is Zod-validated; null tokens short-circuit
to `rejected` locally.

Option to disable alliances + 2 new modifiers for variety 😄 (#3392)
## Description:
Rex had this idea: "It would be funny to have an option in private
lobbies to disable alliances."
I added it as an option.
Now people can choose to live in constant fear of their neighbors 😆
Also added two new public game modifiers for variety (only for the
special rotation):
- Alliances disabled (low probability)
- x2 gold multiplier (low probability)
Would be nice to squeeze this into v30, last minute?

Configurable nation count 🤖 (#3338)
## Description: I hope we can get this into v30? The nation count is configurable now, just like the bot count. Replaced the "Disable Nations" toggle with a nations slider (0–400) in SinglePlayer and Host Lobby modals. <img width="710" height="121" alt="Screenshot 2026-03-03 021952" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c8d0f0c3-db51-4303-95fa-dbc770460ec2" /> Public games are staying exactly the same, this is just for singleplayer and private lobby fun. Youtubers could play HvN against 400 nations, for example. Singleplayer enjoyers no longer have to play against 1 nation in HvN, they can freely choose. `GameConfig.disableNations: boolean` got replaced by `nations: number (0-400, optional)` `undefined` = map default, `0` = disabled, number = custom count Nations slider defaults to the map's nation count, shows "(MAP DEFAULT)" label when unchanged Compact map toggle reduces nations to 25% when at default, restores when toggled off (just like we already do with bots) The nation count for HvN no longer automatically matches the human count in singleplayer and private games, only in public games. **What if there aren't enough nations configured for the map?** We just use the HvN logic (Generate random nations) ### Warning **This infra PR also needs to get merged: https://github.com/openfrontio/infra/pull/263 Otherwise players can set 0 nations and get achievements.** ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [X] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: FloPinguin |

For v30: Add new modifiers (Hard nations and 25M Starting Gold) 🙂 (#3316)
## Description: Adds two new public game modifiers for variety and improves compact map eligibility for team games. ### New Modifiers **Hard Nations (`isHardNations`)** - We need this modifier for HvN, because medium nations are easier now (will result in a much higher human winrate) - In a discord discussion we concluded that HvN should generally be easier (higher winrate than 50%, so players are less frustated) - Thats why only 20% of HvN games have the hard nations modifier (for now) - For PvPvE enjoyers, the modifier is also active in FFA games => (Only 2.5% chance, and 1 ticket in `SPECIAL_MODIFIER_POOL`) **25M Starting Gold (`startingGoldHigh`)** - Some people in the main discord wanted this modifier, and it will result in crazy games - Rare special-only modifier (1 ticket in pool); mutually exclusive with 5M starting gold via `MUTUALLY_EXCLUSIVE_MODIFIERS` - Disables nations (they lack PVP immunity, so 25M gold doesn't work well with them) - Excluded from HumansVsNations games (since it disables nations) - Spawn immunity set to **2 minutes 30 seconds** (vs 30s for 5M gold), so people can spend the gold and prepare ### Other Changes - **Improved `supportsCompactMapForTeams`**: Replaced the hard `smallest >= 50` land-tile cutoff with a per-team-config calculation that simulates worst-case compact player count and checks every team gets at least 2 players. - **HvN spawn immunity**: Always 5 seconds in both regular and special lobbies (to get rid of a confusing PVP immunity HeadsUpMessage in 5M starting gold games) - **Regular public lobby random spawn modifier probabilty**: Reduced from 10% to 5% (Because of the new modifier, so there aren't too many modifiers in non-special-lobbies, should only occur sometimes there) - Rebalanced `SPECIAL_MODIFIER_POOL` a bit ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [X] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: FloPinguin |

Fix nation spawnkilling 🔧 (#3222)
## Description: As far as I can remember, in v28 the spawn immunity applied to both humans and nations. With the configurable spawn immunity (added for v29) the spawn immunity no longer applies to nations... Because its called PVP immunity now. So right now it's possible to spawnkill nations. This is a big problem for the 5M gold modifier games... And you can "cheat" in singleplayer. This PR changes two things: - Nations always have 5 seconds spawn immunity now, no matter whats configured for the PVP immunity - Nations attack TerraNullius earlier (Otherwise the easy nations would sometimes do their first attack after the 5 seconds are over, spawnkills would still be possible) ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [X] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: FloPinguin --------- Co-authored-by: Ryan <7389646+ryanbarlow97@users.noreply.github.com> |

Crowded modifier 😄 (#3023)
## Description: To increase variety a bit more I present: The "crowded" public game modifier :) It basically simulates a crazy youtuber lobby. HPA* Pathfinding (#2815)
## Pathfinding with HPA*
Hi! The primary objective of this PR is to replace per-tile A* with
hierarchical pathfinding - HPA*. In practice, this means we create an
abstract graph on top of the actual map with far fewer points and use it
to decide on general path structure. Only then we go back to tile-level
and build path between selected waypoints. This speeds up long distance
pathfinding by over 1000x in some cases. To make the review easier, it
comes with a benchmark and visual playground.
## PREPROCESSING
H part of HPA* means "hierarchical" and requires preprocessing.
This PR includes pre-processing as part inside `new Game()` constructor.
It takes about 135ms for `giantworldmap` on my machine, which increases
the effective initialization from ~95ms to ~230ms. This time could be
reduced in different ways, which are **out of scope** for this PR.
After confirming the initialization time is bearable on low-end devices,
I argue merging this PR as-is is acceptable tradeoff. It creates small
lag at the beginning of a round but pays for itself in the first minute
of the match.
## Nerdy details
**Architecture**
- HPA*-style hierarchical pathfinding
- 32×32 sectors on minimap with gateway nodes on borders
- Gateway graph built via BFS during preprocessing
- Water component optimization skips unreachable gateway pairs
- A* on gateway graph → local A* within sectors → Bresenham path
smoothing
- Minimap upscaling identical to currently used in MiniAStar
**Key Optimizations**
- Typed arrays instead of high-level primitives
- Stamp-based visited tracking (no need to recreate buffers, O(1)
clearing)
- Optional - enabled by default - caching of tile paths between gateways
- Line of sight smoothing for the final path
## Review Focus
Play with included tools, benchmark and visualization. Pathfinding
should be safe to merge as a black box - you do not need to understand
the details. Outcomes can be tested empirically in-game. Visualize (and
share!) edge cases with included playground. Confirm the 100x speedup is
real with benchmark.
If you plan to dive into the code, I suggest the following order:
- Pathfinding abstraction in `src/core/pathfinding/`
- Pathfinding tests in `tests/core/pathfinding/`
- NavMesh in `src/core/pathfinding/navmesh/` + integration with
`Game.ts`
- Benchmark in `tests/pathfinding/benchmark/`
Do not look at playground's code, it has been created with a clanker.
The design is 100% mine and I spent way too long polishing it, but I
haven't even once edited the code manually. There is probably no
abstraction whatsoever, just do not look at the code, let it play.
## Core Changes
#### Pathfinding (`src/core/pathfinding/navmesh/`)
- HPA* + refinement -> three phased pathfinding: A* over the graph ->
naive path -> refinement
- comes with A* and BFS optimized for for specific needs
#### Pre-Processing (`src/core/pathfinding/navmesh/`)
- identify water bodies to avoid pathfinding between disconnected nodes
- create high-level graph of gateways on top of tile map
#### Abstraction (`src/core/pathfinding/`)
- common `PathFinder` interface that can return full path and also act
as state machine (`.next()`)
- adapters for both new and legacy algorithm with fallback to legacy if
navigation mesh not available
#### Benchmark (`tests/pathfinding/benchmark/`)
- `npx tsx tests/pathfinding/benchmark/run.ts` - no guesswork, numbers
- `npx tsx tests/pathfinding/benchmark/run.ts --synthetic` - 1000s of
synthetic paths
- `npx tsc tests/pathfinding/benchmark/generate.ts` - generate more as
needed, test new maps
- includes ONE synthetic scenario to avoid PR bloat, generate more
locally / later
#### Playground (`tests/pathfinding/playground/`)
- `npx tsx tests/pathfinding/playground/server.ts` - visualize paths
with both new and legacy algorithm

Added a public game modifier system 😮 For more variety (#2801)
## Description: Added a public game modifier system. It causes that 5% of public games are played on the compact version of the map 10% of public games have "Random Spawn" activated Percentages can easily get changed via `DefaultConfig`. We can also easily add more modifiers. Modifiers can stack, so in rare cases you will play on a compact map with random spawn 😄 More variety! ### "Compact Map" modifier implementation - With the "Compact Map" modifier the lobby max player count gets reduced to 25% and only 25% of the regular bots and only 25% of the regular nations will spawn (because the map has only 25% of its regular size) - In private lobbies and singleplayer the nation reduction happens too (When "Compact Map" is enabled). ### Restrictions - Duos/Trios/Quads team modes do not get Random Spawn (defeats the purpose) - Maps with smallest player count < 50 do not get Compact Map in team games (not enough players after the reduction to 25%). I have calculated all the possible max player counts. ### How it looks like Random Spawn modifier: <img width="528" height="183" alt="Screenshot 2026-01-06 194959" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2f729da9-80c3-4548-8205-71129da2a76a" /> Very rare case: Two modifiers at the same time and only 10 max players have been chosen from `[GameMapType.FaroeIslands]: [20, 15, 10]`. Because of the 75% reduction in player count only 3 players are allowed (3 is the minimum). I think its funny that you can play a 1v1v1 in rare occasions 😄 <img width="526" height="184" alt="Screenshot 2026-01-06 194938" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/834326eb-df03-41b7-b1db-1efa3f1013b5" /> ### Funny side-effect Team games with random spawn. That will be interesting. No more "Who is better in donating troops to the frontline". Instead you have to heavily coordinate with your teammates. ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [X] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: FloPinguin |

Configurable immunity timer (#2763)
## Description: Resolve discussions about stalled PR https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/2460 <img width="724" height="348" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c2c9fa79-cace-431a-9ca4-b3656612fa9d" /> Changes: - Added a `Player::canAttackPlayer(other)` function to determine whether a player can be attacked. - This function is now used in most places where a fight can occur: - AttackExecution (land attacks) - Naval invasion - Warship fight - Nukes can't be thrown during the truce - Immunity only affect human players. Nations and bot will fight as usual, and can be fought against. - The immunity timer uses minutes in the modal window. UI: - The immunity phase is displayed with a timer bar at the top. This is from the original PR, to be discussed if it's not deemed visible enough: <img width="632" height="215" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f5ab9aa0-bd4f-4503-b8d6-b40b121fba65" /> ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: IngloriousTom --------- Co-authored-by: newyearnewphil <git@nynp.dev> |

Cleanup nations (Part 1) 🧹 (#2637)
## Description: 1. Using the wording `"Nation"`, `"FakeHuman"` and `"NPC"` at the same time is confusing. So I renamed every mention of `"FakeHuman"` and `"NPC"` in the entire project to `"Nation"`. Just like they are called ingame. 2. `BotBehavior.ts` was originally intended for sharing the logic between nations and bots. But at the moment, the logic there isn't really shared and it's basically just about attacking. So I renamed `BotBehavior.ts` to `AiAttackBehavior.ts`. I use "Ai" to indicate that this file is used by bots AND nations. 3. Moved `execuction/utils/AllianceBehavior.ts` to `execuction/nation/NationAllianceBehavior.ts` to make sure everybody understands that this file is not about alliances in general. It's just about nations and how they handle alliances. 4. Removed `difficultyModifier` from `DefaultConfig`. It's unused and I think we usually want to finetune the difficulty instead of using that method. 5. Added `assertNever` in all `switch (difficulty)` default cases.

AFK team mate v2: better ship handling + tests + bugfix (#2396)
## Description: See PR https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/2203 It was reverted. This unreverts it, with an added fix for boat troops not getting returned to owner. And small comment updates. And a const for boatOwner to re-use. The added bugfix is check for this.sourceTile === null in the retreat() function in AttackExecution. A boat attack always sets removeTroops to false because the troops were already removed from owner troops when the boat departed. They don't have to be removed again in AttackExecution init, when the boat lands and the attack starts. But at the end of the attack, in retreat() in AttackExecution, the starting/boat troops still need to be returned to the owner. That's why even if removeTroops is false, when sourceTile is not null (only when it's a boat attack) we add back the troops to the owner. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: tryout33 --------- Co-authored-by: Fx Morin <28154542+FxMorin@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Ryan <7389646+ryanbarlow97@users.noreply.github.com> |

Extend SAM Range to cover Hydros when stacked (#2351)
## Description: Implements SAM range extension for stacked SAMs to cover hydros as requested in #2347 and many times from users in discord. This implementation is as simple as possible: At level 5 and higher, SAMs extend their range to the range of a hydrogen bomb + 10 for a small safety margin. Levels 2-4 are interpolated between. Screenshot to show the sizes compared to a hydro: <img width="400" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/a857d66c-e3d4-467f-855f-3539cc90b719" /> Everything works together with the new range UI, although I might need to unify with / rebase on #2350. Not yet tested with #2348, but shouldn't be an issue. ## Input needed: - Should I add tests for this? - This is in effect a massive buff to SAMs, might be too strong. Popular ideas / suggestions from Discord to balance things: - Cap the SAM upgrade level at the maximum range (easy to do) - Alternative, instead of capping the level, decrease the range when missiles are reloading - Increase the cost scaling for SAMs per stack, and scale way higher (e.g. 1.5M > 3M > 4.5M > 6M or something like that) (UI integration unclear, breaks with existing cost logic) - Decrease SAM hit probability for Hydros I'm happy to implement any of these paths, or just roll with the simple way it's set up now, just let me know. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: newyearnewphil --------- Co-authored-by: Evan <evanpelle@gmail.com> |

AFK team mate: better ship handling + tests + bugfix (#2203)
## Description: Have AFK player's Warships not attack team members ships, like Transport Ships boating in. If team mate conquers the AFK player, transfer over Warships and Transport Ships to conqueror. The transfered Transport ships attack in the name of the new owner when landing, and when they are retreated they move back to a new owner shore tile if they have any. Added tests. Expectation is this PR will be merged in v26 as the real solution for the temporary workaround of deleting warships. **Currently:** - An AFK player can be attacked without troop loss by their team members. For this purpose, isFriendly now returns false if the other player isDisconnected - But that meant Warships would get False from isFriendly too, and attack the ships and boats of their team members. - [Temporary workaround was to delete warships](https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/commit/eea8db7a06aed50c005db35ad55ece026f7a3643) as soon as the player was deemed AFK. But this is a disadvantage to the team. For example the AFK player could have 6 warships in the waters, either defending team land or helping the team cross over to the enemy team. - Transport Ships that were on the way to attack, were still deleted after the AFK player was conquered. But this is also a disadvantage, if say a transport ship has just managed to breach through to the enemy lands despite warships all around. That could have made the win for the team. (Left to think about: do we want to transfer part of the defender troops to the isOnSameTeam attacker? Defender looses less troops in the attack from their team mate. You'd expect troops to lay down their arms mostly, if the attacker is on the same team and doesn't loose troops themselves. Those troops that they loose less than normal, are then added to the attacker once they've been deemed conqueror. The enemy team can still attack and do normal damage, and can still also be the conqueror so the team members have to be fast.) **Changes in this PR:** - GameImpl > conquerPlayer: Transfer ownership of the warships to the conquerer of their lands. If the conqueror is not a team member (other team can still attack, in their case with troop loss), they won't get the warships and the ships will be deleted like normal. If the conqueror is a team member, have them capture the warships. (Captures need to happen in conquerPlayer since this is right before the last tiles are conquered and PlayerExecution finds out the player is dead and deletes its units. Captures will be recorded in the stats just like normal. Things like this add an extra incentive to be the fastest to conquer the AFK player, next to getting their gold which is also recorded in stats. The normal Event Box messages are also displayed.) - GameImpl > conquerPlayer: Also transfer Transport Ships. As a note: the limit of 3 transport ships concurrently out on water for one player, can be exceeded in this specific case (the boatMaxNumber is only checked for canBuild via TransportShipUtils, and in the init of a TransportShipExecution, not for an existing TransportShipExecution with a changing owner). This keeps the situation even for the team in terms of ships that are already out to attack, which is fair. captureUnit/setOwner won't do the full job here though, so changes in TransportShipExecution are needed. - TransportShipExecution: Added originalOwner. So we can check within the execution itself if the Original owner disconnected, and if so if the new owner is on the same team. Only in that case change private this.attacker. This.attacker can still not be changed from the outside in this way. Find new src of new owner to retreat boat to if needed, and if new owner has no shore set it to null so the boat will be deleted upon retreat. To find new src tile of new owner, use bestTransportShipSpawn instead of canBuild because canBuild checks for max boats = 3 etcera but the boat is already on its way so those checks don't apply (we could get false back from canBuild because there's 3 ships out, while we only need to find the source tile so use bestTransportShipSpawn). - TransportShipUtils: to use bestTransportShipSpawn to find new owner source tile to retreat to, we need to make sure it can handle a new owner without shore tiles. When the new owner has no shore tiles (candidates.length === 0), return false. This way it won't go on to call MiniAStar which would have SerialAStar error on an empty this.sources array. - WarshipExecution: Changed isFriendly. This makes sure we have the wanted behavior: allied/team ships should not attack each other once one of their owners goes AFK. - AttackExecution: added one more test specifically to check if attack on AFK teammate is still witthout troop loss "Player can attack disconnected team mate without troop loss". Also a bugfix that I left in after removing a related change from this PR: Add a check for removeTroops === false in the retreat() function, so at the end of the attack we don't add troops back to owner troops if they were never removed in the init. This check in retreat() is actually a bug fix because removeTroops is in the constructor and can be set to True, but in retreat() troops would then have been given back after not being removed at init. - DefaultConfig: small addition to comment. - Disconnected.test.ts: added tests. Added useRealAttackLogic because at least "Player can attack disconnected team mate without troop loss" needs to use the real attackLogic. - TestConfig: new class useRealAttackLogic extends TestConfig class, so a test setup can use the real attackLogic from DefaultConfig instead of the mock function in TestConfig. - Setup.ts: for the test setup, add parameter to accept useRealAttackLogic extension class. Defaults to TestConfig. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: tryout33 --------- Co-authored-by: Evan <evanpelle@gmail.com> |

Reduce Docker image size by refactoring map loading (#1621)
## Description: This PR implements a major refactoring of how map data is stored and loaded, as described in #1242. Previously, map data (`.bin` files) was bundled directly into the client-side JavaScript by Webpack using `binary-loader`. This approach led to data duplication and increased bundle/image sizes. This refactoring changes the strategy entirely: - `GameMapLoader` interface has been introduced to decouple the map loading mechanism from the components that use it. - New `FetchGameMapLoader` implementation loads map data by fetching it from static server endpoint. - Webpack configuration and `Dockerfile` have been updated to serve the map files as static assets and to remove the source `resources/maps` directory from the final image, thus eliminating data duplication. This leads to several key improvements: - Docker image size is reduced from ~750 MB to ~600 MB. - Build time is decreased. On my local machine, the docker image build time went from 48s to 43s. Most of this speed-up comes from faster Webpack builds (reduced from 16s to 11s), as it no longer needs to process large binary files. This performance gain will be noticeable for all developers during local development, not just in the CI workflow. ## Please complete the following: - [X] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [X] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [X] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [X] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced - [X] I have read and accepted the CLA agreement (only required once). ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: aaa4xu |

Move maps generation out of repo, new map structure (#1256)
## Description: Move map generation outside of main repo, it has been rewritten in Go and is much faster. Also refactor how maps are stored, one dir per map. The map binaries are basically identical to before. Some maps like Africa have 1% difference in bytes, but playing it looks exactly the same. Use lazy loading for map data access so only needed files are accessed. Unit tests now load map binary instead of regenerating it from scratch, speeding them up. ## Please complete the following: - [x] I have added screenshots for all UI updates - [x] I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file - [x] I have added relevant tests to the test directory - [x] I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced - [x] I understand that submitting code with bugs that could have been caught through manual testing blocks releases and new features for all contributors ## Please put your Discord username so you can be contacted if a bug or regression is found: evan |
