Sinon does not check the contents of the passed error when checked via
 sinon.stub().calledWith.
```
callback = sinon.stub()
callback(new Error("some message"))
  .calledWith(new Error("completely different message"))
  === true
```

Cherry-pick plus an additional patch for the joinProject bail-out.
