evanpelle 7863529b2c rename client/graphics → client/hud
The contents (Lit web components for in-game chat, build menu, leaderboard,
attack displays, etc.) are HUD, not graphics — the actual graphics is in
client/render/.

evanpelle 61f6d2fdd4 restore alt-view (space hold) toggle
InputHandler still emits AlternateViewEvent on space down/up, and the
renderer still has setAltView. The bridge between them lived in
MapInteraction's applyAltView, which got deleted with the rest of
MapInteraction — nothing was wiring the event to the view anymore.
Expose view.setAltView and have ClientGameRunner subscribe.

evanpelle 5a9694e2bd replace MapInteraction with HoverHighlightController; one input system
MapInteraction bound DOM events to the WebGL canvas, but the canvas has
pointer-events: none post-migration so its pointermove/down/up/wheel/
keydown listeners never fired — duplicating InputHandler (which owns
the inputOverlay div + EventBus pipeline) and leaving most features
dead. The one alive bit was hover→setHighlightOwner, which I'd
manually forwarded as a workaround.

Now there's a HoverHighlightController that listens to MouseMoveEvent,
computes the cursor's tile owner, and pushes setHighlightOwner. Delete
map-interaction.ts (418 lines) + keyboard-pan.ts, trim the DOM-binding
constructor + proxy methods (setFitZoomOnDoubleClick, setPanSpeed,
setZoomSpeed, etc.) out of GameView, and drop the ClientGameRunner
pointermove forwarder.

Input flows through one path: DOM → inputOverlay → InputHandler →
EventBus → controllers/renderer.

evanpelle fb45c27d82 add subtle player-tile highlight on nation hover
The hover wiring already pushed setHighlightOwner into the border pass,
but the WebGL canvas has pointer-events: none (post-migration to the
inputOverlay div) so MapInteraction's pointermove listener never fired.
Forward pointermove from the input overlay to view.handlePointerMove
so hover actually triggers.

While there, brighten every tile owned by the hovered player — the
territory frag shader now reads uHighlightOwner / uHighlightBrighten
and mixes toward white when the tile owner matches. Wired through
territory-pass.ts; renderer.setHighlightOwner forwards to both border
and territory passes. New highlightFillBrighten setting (0.15) keeps
the fill tint tunable independently of the existing highlightBrighten
border setting, which is dropped from 0.6 → 0.25 so neither effect
blows out.

evanpelle c197f5864f replace day/night cycle with a binary light/dark mode tied to UserSettings
The cycling sun/moon animation was distracting and not a fan favorite.
Drops the cycle path entirely — RenderSettings.dayNight.mode is now
"light" | "dark", and the cycle-only fields (cycleTicks, startPhase,
noonHold, nightHold) plus the passEnabled.dayNight toggle are gone.
getAmbient is a one-liner. The in-game mode follows the existing
darkMode UserSetting (same one that drives the page-level CSS class);
ClientGameRunner applies it on startup and on the per-key change event.

evanpelle a743a31897 delete dead canvas2D utilities, rename mountWebGLDebugRenderer → mountWebGLFrameLoop
ProgressBar and StructureDrawingUtils had no production callers — only
their own test referenced ProgressBar, and StructureDrawingUtils was a
canvas2D-era helper module that nothing imports anymore.

mountWebGLDebugRenderer was named back when WebGL was a side-by-side
debug overlay; it's the only renderer now, so the "Debug" prefix is
misleading. Also dropped the `\` keybind that hid the GL canvas — with
no other renderer, hiding it just blanks the game.

evanpelle eb046e5a58 move TransformHandler/UIState/Controller out of graphics/, drop dead GhostStructureChangedEvent
graphics/ was a canvas2D-era directory name — TransformHandler, UIState,
and the Controller interface aren't graphics, they're cross-cutting
client state. Hoist them to src/client/ so the path matches what they
are. GhostStructureChangedEvent had three emitters and zero listeners;
removed.

evanpelle 7b1557b886 controllers push to the WebGL view directly, drop ClientGameRunner relays
BuildPreviewController and WarshipSelectionController now take the WebGL
view in their constructor and call view.updateGhostPreview /
view.setSelectedUnits themselves instead of emitting bus events that
ClientGameRunner forwarded. Splits the old mountWebGLDebugRenderer in
two — createWebGLView builds the view up front so the renderer can wire
controllers to it, mountWebGLDebugRenderer does the per-frame plumbing
after the transformHandler exists. GhostPreviewUpdatedEvent had no
remaining consumers and is removed.

evanpelle b2f84aad33 delete canvas2D map canvas — WebGL is the only renderer left
After every map-anchored visual moved to WebGL (terrain, territory,
structures, names, selection boxes, ghost preview, move chevrons,
FX) there's nothing drawing to the canvas2D context. Rip it out.

evanpelle 5002dfdc2a delete Pixi build-ghost rendering from StructureIconsLayer
The WebGL ghost (StructurePass + RangeCirclePass + RailroadPass +
CrosshairPass) is fed via GhostPreviewUpdatedEvent and looks correct;
the Pixi-rendered ghost was a duplicate.

Strip the Pixi side out of StructureIconsLayer:
- delete imports for pixi.js / pixi-filters / colord plugins / Theme /
  SpriteFactory / StructureDrawingUtils / bitmapFont / renderNumber
- delete fields: pixicanvas, ghostStage, rootStage, renderer,
  rendererInitialized, theme, factory, filterRedArray, rebuildPending,
and the Pixi half of ghostUnit (container, priceText, priceBg,
priceGroup, priceBox, range, rangeLevel, targetingAlly) — now just
  { buildableUnit }
- delete methods: setupRenderer, redraw, rendererOrGLContextLost,
  resizeCanvas, renderLayer, shouldTransform, updateGhostPrice,
updateGhostRange, plus the Pixi guts of moveGhost /
  createGhostStructure / clearGhostStructure

init() is now sync; the per-RAF state checks move to a tick()-driven
syncGhostState() + renderGhost() (renderGhost still re-queries
buildables, just no longer paints anything).

Net: ~250 LOC gone, no canvas2D drawing left in the layer. The
canvas2D map canvas itself has no remaining writers — ready to be
deleted in a follow-up.

evanpelle 923cba8c2d move multi-unit warship selection box to WebGL SelectionBoxPass
SelectionBoxPass now stores an array of selections and renders one
quad per entry. GPURenderer gains setSelectedUnits(ids) — the
single-unit setSelectedUnit becomes a wrapper. Position + color are
rebuilt each frame from lastUnits; dead unit IDs get pruned in place.

ClientGameRunner's UnitSelectionEvent listener forwards both single
and multi to view.setSelectedUnits — no more single/multi split.

UILayer drops everything canvas2D-related: the offscreen canvas +
context, theme, selectionAnimTime, multiSelectionBoxCenters,
SELECTION_BOX_SIZE, drawSelectionBoxMulti, paintSelectionBoxAt,
clearSelectionBox, paintCell, clearCell, and renderLayer / redraw /
shouldTransform. tick() now only prunes destroyed warships from the
selection list; the layer is purely state + click handling. ~120 LOC
gone.

Tests: UILayer.test.ts updated — drops the canvas/redraw asserts,
adds a multi-selection state assertion.

evanpelle ede0fb7668 move single-unit warship selection box to WebGL SelectionBoxPass
UnitSelectionEvent now forwards to view.setSelectedUnit(unit.id()) in
mountWebGLDebugRenderer; the renderer's SelectionBoxPass draws the
animated stippled outline on the GPU. UILayer still tracks
selectedUnit for game-logic readers (the click handlers) but no longer
paints to canvas2D for it.

Drops drawSelectionBox + lastSelectionBoxCenter (~50 LOC) plus the
per-tick single-unit redraw in tick(). Multi-selection stays on
canvas2D — SelectionBoxPass is single-unit only.

Test update: replaces the now-dead drawSelectionBox spy with a
selectedUnit state assertion + a deselect case.

evanpelle 3481beba8a delete canvas2D NameLayer; render names via WebGL NamePass
Stop drawing names on canvas2D — NamePass already gets the placement
data (gameView.frameData().names) and lerps positions in-shader. Drop
the runtime passEnabled.name=false override in ClientGameRunner,
remove NameLayer from the layers list, and delete NameLayer.ts.

Known gaps (deferred):
- Player-uploaded flags not in the bundled atlas render as no-flag;
needs a JIT atlas built at game start.
- The shared computePlayerStatus is the replay variant, so the
alliance / target / embargo / nukeTargetsMe status icons stay off
for the local player's perspective. Needs a live-aware variant.

evanpelle 2fec1e994e retire DynamicUILayer, restore warship UX on WebGL
DynamicUILayer was a canvas2D mix of: bonus-event gold/troops popups
(already duplicated by WebGL BonusPopupPass), nuke/transport telegraph
indicators (duplicated by WebGL passes), and a warship move-indicator
chevron drawn via MoveIndicatorUI. Delete the layer outright along
with its three orphan UI helpers (MoveIndicatorUI, NavalTarget,
NukeTelegraph).

That deletion uncovered a pre-existing bug from the "migrate away from
canvas" commit: warship select/move no longer worked. The deleted
UnitLayer had owned the click flow that emits MoveWarshipIntentEvent.
Re-add the flow inside UILayer (which already tracks selected /
multi-selected warships for its selection box): MouseUpEvent →
move-multi → move-single → select-nearest, plus shift+drag box
complete and select-all hotkey.

Wire MoveWarshipIntentEvent → view.showMoveIndicator(tx, ty, ownerID)
in mountWebGLDebugRenderer so the WebGL MoveIndicatorPass draws the
converging-chevron animation at the move target, colored by the
warship's owner. mountWebGLDebugRenderer now takes gameView + eventBus
to resolve the owner and subscribe.

evanpelle 3af1751119 fix: eliminate WebGL camera-sync lag and forced-reflow cost
Two issues with mounting the WebGL renderer alongside canvas2D:

1. One-frame camera lag. WebGL had its own RAF loop independent of
canvas2D's. When the user panned, WebGL's RAF could fire before
canvas2D's syncCamera ran, drawing with stale camera state.
Fix: pass a capturing raf/caf to the renderer so its loop never
actually schedules itself; invoke the captured frame callback
synchronously from canvas2D's onPreRender hook, after setCameraState.
Both renderers now lock-step on a single RAF.

2. Layout thrashing. syncCamera read glCanvas.clientWidth/Height every
frame, forcing a synchronous layout flush — ~11% CPU under Layout.
Fix: cache canvas dimensions and update via ResizeObserver. Canvas
size changes are rare; the cached values are accurate between
   resizes.

evanpelle 5b663fae14 refactor: share renderer state shapes between game and WebGL renderer
PlayerView/UnitView now wrap renderer-shaped state objects (PlayerState,
PlayerStatic, UnitState) directly instead of holding engine wire types.
GameView owns a long-lived FrameData object kept in sync each tick:
players/units/tiles/trail/railroad are mutated in place; derived buffers
(playerStatus, relationMatrix, allianceClusters, nukeTelegraphs,
attackRings) and events are recomputed in a final populateFrame() pass.

The renderer reads gameView.frameData() and the same byte-identical
state objects PlayerView/UnitView wrap. WebGLFrameBuilder shrinks from
~270 to ~70 LOC: palette management + a single uploadFrameData() call,
no per-frame UnitState allocation on the hot path.

Wiring: maxPlayers=1024 on RendererConfig (pre-sizes NamePass/palette/
relation matrix textures); NamePass disabled so HTML NameLayer remains
the only on-screen player names.

Also: 39 new tests covering PlayerView/GameView/FrameData behavior;
replace .data field access in three layer call sites with accessor
methods (betrayals(), type(), getTraitorRemainingTicks()).

Evan 275fd0dccc refactor: collapse per-env Configs into ClientEnv + ServerEnv (#3906)
## Description:

This is a refactor to simplify config handling.

Replaces the per-environment DevConfig/PreprodConfig/ProdConfig class
hierarchy with two static classes: ClientEnv (browser main thread, reads
from window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG) and ServerEnv (Node server, reads from
process.env). The four config classes are deleted, the abstract
DefaultServerConfig is gone, and DefaultConfig is renamed to Config.

The values that flow server → client (gameEnv, numWorkers,
turnstileSiteKey, jwtAudience, instanceId) used to be baked into the
hardcoded per-env classes. They're now real env vars on the server,
embedded into a single window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG object in index.html at
request time (alongside the existing gitCommit/assetManifest/cdnBase
globals, which moved into the same object), and read back by ClientEnv
on the client. The dev defaults previously hidden inside DevServerConfig
are now explicit in start:server-dev (NUM_WORKERS=2,
TURNSTILE_SITE_KEY=1x..., JWT_AUDIENCE=localhost, etc.) and in
vite.config.ts's html plugin inject.data. Production deploys plumb
NUM_WORKERS and TURNSTILE_SITE_KEY through deploy.yml (GitHub vars) into
the remote env file; JWT_AUDIENCE is derived from DOMAIN in deploy.sh.
The dynamic /api/instance endpoint is gone — INSTANCE_ID rides along in
BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG now.

ServerEnv is the only thing server code touches; ClientEnv is
browser-only. The two classes have intentional overlap (env, numWorkers,
jwtIssuer, gameCreationRate, workerIndex, etc.) since they derive
identical logic from different sources — there's a TODO in each to
consolidate via a shared helper later. The game-logic Config no longer
stores a ServerConfig/ClientEnv reference and its serverConfig() getter
is gone; the one caller (MultiTabModal) now reads ClientEnv.env()
directly. Worker init no longer carries server-config values since
nothing in the worker actually reads them.

Sky Elder 38cb3027cb Feature Add retaliate keybind (#3801)
If this PR fixes an issue, link it below. If not, delete these two
lines.
Resolves #3174

## Description:

This PR implements a keybind for retaliation against incoming non-bot
attacks (Players and Nations). It currently will target the most recent
(last in array) incoming attack when the keybind is pressed, choosing
the minimum of attack ratio or incoming attack troop size to retaliate
with. This correlates with the last displayed incoming attack on the
bottom modal. It works when there are multiple attacks (press multiple
times to retaliate against each consecutive attack). If the retaliation
size is smaller than the attack, the keybind can be pressed multiple
times to repeatedly blunt the incoming troop count.

Due to the current keybind logic KeyR cannot be used but Shift+KeyR can
so it is set to that until refactor.

<img width="867" height="121" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/56e80810-4900-4db0-8ce7-1856e13529e5"
/>

No tests have been added as the retaliation feature doesn't seem to have
any to begin with since it is just an attack intent. The keybind is not
configured any differently than others. I did run all current tests and
was all good.

VariableVince eca5794ebb Chore(deps): Update and remove dependencies (#3819)
## Description:

Only mentioning removals/major updates/notable changes below, not all
minor upgrades.

### Removed:
- "@aws-sdk/client-s3": not used anywhere (was used in Archive.ts
previously)
- chai, "@types/chai", sinon-chai: not used anywhere, probably leftover.
Vitest uses a bundled version of Chai for its expect asserations under
the hood too.
- protobufjs, "@types/google-protobuf": not used anywhere, probably left
from evan's experiment with it? Removed from vite.config.ts too.
- "@types/jquery": not used anywhere, probably leftover
- sinon, "@types/sinon": not used anywhere just like chai, probably
leftover. And Vitest provides us with the same functionality.
- "@types/systeminformation": dependency systeminformation was removed
last year, this is an unneeded, deprecated and unmaintained remainder.
- vite-tsconfig-paths: removed, and removed the import and usage in
vite.config.ts and replaced it by adding `tsconfigPaths: true` to the
`resolve` block. Because of this message displayed on running the tests:
"The plugin "vite-tsconfig-paths" is detected. Vite now supports
tsconfig paths resolution natively via the resolve.tsconfigPaths option.
You can remove the plugin and set resolve.tsconfigPaths: true in your
Vite config instead."
- vite-plugin-static-copy: removed, we don't use it anymore (was used in
our vite.config.ts once,, probably before Vite natively supported
copying static assets via its publicDir configuration)

### Updated:
- color.js: v0.5 > v0.6, no breaking change affecting us
- cross-env: v7 > v10. It's a publicly archived repo since Nov 2025. But
before that he got it up-to-date from June 2025, porting to TS, dropping
old Node versions, dependencies etc. Seems still good to use for some
amount of time to come.
- dotenv: v16 > v17, now logs an informational message by default when
it loads an environment file. Can be disabled by using
dotenv.config({quite: true}) if needed.
- ejs: v3 > v5: security patches mostly. Vite still uses v3 btw.
- eslint: v9 > v10. Newly enabled rules by default:
'no-unassigned-vars', 'no-useless-assignment' and
'preserve-caught-error'. Mostly faster and minimum support moved to
higher node versions, which shouldn't be a problem.
- "@eslint/compat": v1 > v2. Minimum supported Node versions, which
should not be a problem.
- intl-messageformat: v10 > v11 no breaking changes that affect us
- jdom: v27 > v29. Faster. Most notably minimum support moved to higher
node v22 version, which should not be a problem. Also, see types/node,
kind of expecting v24 to be installed now.
- nanoid: from v3 to v5, no breaking changes that affect us
- "@opentelemetry/sdk-logs": now that addLogRecordProcessor is removed,
changed Logger.ts to pass an (empty) provider array directly to the
LoggerProvider constructor. Follows the changes in
https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-js/pull/5588
- "@tailwindcss/vite": supports vite v8 from 4.2.2, and a fix for it in
4.2.4
- tailwindcss: supports vite v8 from 4.2.2
-- in 4.1.15 (we were already above this version) break-words was
deprecated in favor of wrap-break-word. But break-words, which we use in
15 places, will still work as expected
(https://github.com/tailwindlabs/tailwindcss/pull/19157). Same goes for
also deprecated "order-none".
- "@types/node": from v22 to v24, assuming most now use node 24
- vite v7 > v8:
-- is now on 8.0.10 so first bugs are out of it, while v8 itself also
fixed a big number of bugs.
-- in vite.config.ts, fixed Ts error/compilation issue by changing the
manualChunks option in build.rollupOptions.output to use the function
syntax, which is required by the updated types instead of the object
syntax.
- zod: no changes that affect us

### Prettier:
Updated only because of (new because of update?) Prettier errors for
files untouched in this PR originally:
- PathFinder.Parabola.ts
- WorkerMessages.ts
- ClanModal.handlers.test.ts
- ClanModal.rendering.test.ts‎
- CONTRIBUTING.md
- README.md

### ESLint:
Fixes needed to silence errors coming from newly enabled recommended
rules 'no-useless-assignment' and 'preserve-caught-error':

For 'no-useless-assignment' (default assignment never used because of
unreachable code or they are guaranteed to get a value, so they can be
undefinedat the start. Exception was AttackExecution, so made the
default value of 0 the default case in the switch statement):

- GameModeSelector
- NameBoxCalculator
- StructureDrawingUtils
- TerritoryLayer
- Diagnostics
- GameRunner
- ColorAllocator
- DefaultConfig
- AttackExecution
- AiAttackBehavior
- Worker.worker
- GamePreviewBuilder

For 'preserve-caught-error', disabled the rule here because the possible
fix `{cause: error}` was introduced in ES2022 while we're still on
target ES2020 currently:
- GameServer
- Privilege

Evan 1776ae4f35 go to player on spawn start (#3802)
## Description:

Some new players were having trouble finding themselves on game start

* Emits a GoToPlayerEvent (zoom=8) on the first turn after the spawn
phase, using a hasGoneToPlayer flag to ensure it only fires once per
session
* Adds a zoom parameter to GoToPlayerEvent so callers can specify a
target zoom level
* Adds smooth zoom animation to TransformHandler — the camera now eases
to the target scale alongside the existing position easing, with
screen-center correction to avoid visual jumping on mobile (where canvas
and map dimensions differ)
* Moves GoToPlayerEvent, GoToPositionEvent, and GoToUnitEvent out of
Leaderboard.ts into TransformHandler.ts, where they logically belong

Jarifa 0801798fbd Feat: Alliance and betrayal hotkeys (#3110)
Original Feature request by @FloPinguin
Resolves #3077

## Description:

Adds hotkeys for Requesting alliances and breaking alliances. This
allows for players to send or break alliances whose tile is under the
cursor, without opening the radial menu.

Keybinds:
New "Ally Keybinds" section in Settings -> Keybinds
Request alliance: Default: K - sends an alliance request to the
player/bot/nation under the cursor
Break alliance: Default: L - breaks the alliance with the player at the
cursor

Behavior:
- Cursor must be over a tile owned by the target player. The action runs
only when the game allows it, following the same logic as the radial
menu. (canSendAllianceRequest and canBreakAlliance)
- When an alliance request is sent, the events log shows: "Alliance
request sent to [target]" for confirmation. No extra message for
breaking an alliance (betrayal/debuff message already exists and is sent
upon breaking an alliance)

Ivan Batsulin 20f428d19e Fix middle-click SAM not upgrading other buildings when SAM is unaffo… (#3670)
Resolves #3511

## Description:
When middle-clicking a SAM launcher you own, the game calls
findAndUpgradeNearestBuilding which queries all upgradeable structures
near the clicked tile. If you can't afford the SAM upgrade, canUpgrade
is false for the SAM (because canBuildUnitType returns false when gold <
cost), so the SAM is excluded from the candidates list. If a nearby
building (e.g. a Factory) can be upgraded, it gets picked as the
"nearest" target and is upgraded instead — spending gold the player was
saving for the SAM.

The fix: after finding the best upgrade candidate, check if there's an
owned SAM within the same search radius as the clicked tile. If there
is, but the best candidate is not a SAM (meaning the SAM couldn't be
afforded), do nothing instead of upgrading the other building. This
ensures middle-clicking a SAM either upgrades it or takes no action.

VariableVince 646d7ecaf6 Disable Radial Menu during spawn phase, just left click or tap to pick spawn point (#3611)
## Description:

During spawn phase, disable Radial Menu further. Its options where
already greyed out or non-responding on purpose, except for the attack
button (middle button) which could only be used to select a spawn point
but two clicks for that is convoluted.

It was mostly a nuisance, especially on mobile where you where forced to
go through the Radial Menu, so tap and then tap again to pick a spawn
point.

- Now, left click directly places a spawn point. Even if "Left click
opens menu" is enabled.
- And right click does not open Radial menu anymore. Which had no use
anyway. And also makes touch screen and mouse players more alike in that
they now both have no access to the Radial Menu (which didn't have a
purpose anyway except picking spawn point in a convoluted way with two
clicks).
- On touch screen during spawn phase, the Radial Menu also doesn't open
anymore. Instead of two taps (open Radial Menu > tap attack button), now
one tap suffices to pick a spawn point just like one left mouse click
now does.

Fixes https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/issues/3609

Also from UnitLayer > onTouch:
- remove redundant isValidRef check. Since isValidCoord check was added
in PR 3226 above it, we know it is a correct coord and with that correct
ref, already.
- remove redundant comment about isValidCoord/Ref not being checked
there yet intentionally, because it is actually being checked there
since PR 3226.

Cameron Clark 18da7134c8 Implement FX sound effects (#3394)
## Description:
Adds sound effects for approved events from the [sound asset
pack](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KpGYJkmLxipy8XmTeyHf40XDC4P--Ck8?usp=sharing).
15 new sound effects triggered from `FxLayer`, `EventsDisplay`, and
`RadialMenu`. Sounds play even when visual FX are off, so disabling
explosions doesn't kill audio. Unapproved sounds are included as assets
but not wired up yet.

### SoundManager architecture

Reworked `SoundManager` per [maintainer
feedback](https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/issues/1893#issuecomment-4184649434)
and [follow-up
review](https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3394):

- No more singleton. `SoundManager` is instantiated in
`createClientGame()` with `EventBus` and `UserSettings`
- Layers emit events (`PlaySoundEffectEvent`,
`SetBackgroundMusicVolumeEvent`, `SetSoundEffectsVolumeEvent`) via
EventBus instead of holding a `SoundManager` reference
- `SoundManager` subscribes to these events in its constructor
- `SoundEffect` is a type union (not an enum), per project convention
- All sound configuration (type, URL mapping, events) lives in
`Sounds.ts`
- Sound effects are lazy-loaded on first play
- Channel limit of 8 concurrent sounds. New sounds always play; when at
the limit, the oldest active sound gets stopped
- `SoundManager` bootstraps volume from `UserSettings` in its
constructor
- All Howler calls are wrapped in try/catch with error logging, so sound
failures never crash the game
- `dispose()` method unsubscribes from EventBus and unloads all Howl
instances on game shutdown
- Sound code stays entirely in `src/client/`, nothing in `core/` touches
it

## Sound approval status (per
[spreadsheet](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KpGYJkmLxipy8XmTeyHf40XDC4P--Ck8?usp=sharing))

FloPinguin 0dc522413e Close private lobby when host leaves 🚪 (#3503)
## Description:

When the host of a private lobby disconnects before the game starts, the
lobby is now closed:

- **Server:** Detects host disconnection via `creatorPersistentID`
match, kicks all remaining clients with a `host_left` reason, and marks
the game as ended so it's cleaned up by the game manager and can no
longer be joined.
- **Client:** Participants receive an `alert()` saying "The host has
left the lobby." and their JoinLobbyModal is closed automatically via
the `leave-lobby` event.
- **Phase logic:** `phase()` now returns `Finished` for ended private
lobbies that haven't started, preventing the game from lingering in
`Lobby` state.

scamiv 2be858869c Split runtime and game logic env loading (#3505)
## Description:

This refactors client configuration loading to make the environment
split explicit.

The app currently has two different env concerns:
- the browser main thread needs the live runtime env to select API /
Turnstile / JWT settings
- the worker and game-logic path need a build-time env to select game
config behavior

Before this change, both responsibilities were hidden behind the same
loader, which made the intent unclear and caused confusion around the
worker fallback behavior.

This PR separates those paths explicitly:
- main-thread browser code now uses `getRuntimeClientServerConfig()`
- game creation and worker/game-logic code now uses
`getGameLogicConfig()`
- the build-time game-logic env is represented explicitly as
`GameLogicEnv`

## What Changed

- Added `GameLogicEnv` to model the build-time game config choice
explicitly.
- Added `getRuntimeClientServerConfig()` for live runtime browser config
from `window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG`.
- Added `getBuildTimeGameLogicEnv()` and
`getServerConfigForGameLogicEnv()` for build-time worker/game-logic
config.
- Renamed game config loading from `getConfig()` to
`getGameLogicConfig()` to reflect what it actually does.
- Updated browser call sites to use the runtime client config loader.
- Updated worker/game creation paths to use the game-logic config
loader.
- Updated config loader tests to cover both paths.

## Behavior

This keeps the current intended behavior, but makes it explicit:

- Runtime client env:
  - comes from `window.BOOTSTRAP_CONFIG`
- controls live browser integration settings such as API origin,
Turnstile, and JWT audience/issuer

- Build-time game-logic env:
  - comes from bundled `process.env.GAME_ENV`
  - maps:
    - `dev` -> dev game config
    - `staging` -> default/prod game config
    - `prod` -> default/prod game config

That means preprod/staging deployments can continue using prod game
logic while still using staging API/auth settings on the main thread.

## Why

The previous setup worked, but the naming and loader boundaries were
misleading:
- the same function was used for both runtime browser config and
worker/game config
- the worker fallback looked like an implementation detail instead of an
intentional architectural split

This change makes that intent visible in code without changing the
desired deployment behavior.

VariableVince eb51853b05 Perf/Fix: spawn and other functions that need closest by unit (#3243)
## Description:

Performance improvements.

- **PlayerImpl**: for _nukeSpawn_, cache config to const.
- **Other files**: for nukeSpawn and other functions doing the same,
introduce findClosestBy function.
- for **TradeShipExecution**, with the move from _distSortUnit_ to
_findClosestBy_, also add check if port isActive, !_isMarkedForDeletion_
and !_isUnderConstruction_. These checks should have been there already,
so now do it in one go to make use of the predicate isCandidate in
findClosestBy.
- for **TradeShipExectution.test.ts**, add mock functions for
_isMarkedForDeletion_ and _isUnderConstruction_ because of the above.
Also, set Unit tiles and Pathfinding node to actual valid TileRefs for
the testing map. This prevents NaN as return value from manhattanDist.
This problem was already present with the use of distSortUnit, but that
function just did NaN - NaN, returned the first and only port unit in
the array and called it a day. For findClosestBy we have to make sure
the predicate manhattanDist actually returns a number instead of NaN so
we need actually valid tiles. We now have a working test instead of a
test that actually silently failed like before.
- **PlayerImpl**: _warshipSpawn_ and _nukeSpawn_: Make use of the
isCandidate predicate of findClosestBy to have warshipSpawn not return
ports under construction or (smaller change) inactive. This fixes a bug
i have seen right away (where Warship spawns from under construction
Port).
Same for _nukeSpawn_ silos, don't return inactive silo just to be sure
now that we can easily add it to isCandidate predicate anyway. This
costs no performance in the _nukeSpawn_ benchmarks actually. This should
as a by-effecft fix an edge case bug i have seen, where a nuke is sent
from a phantom silo.

Some of this goes along with PR #3220 since playerImpl buildableUnits
makes use of the underlying spawn functions via canBuild. Just like
ConstructionExecution does. But i didn't want to add more to PR 3220
since there's already a lot in there.

The new function _findClosestBy_ could also be applied to some other
parts of code to benefit of it being faster, so i did that.

_findClosestBy_ uses _findMinimumBy_, which is a little more generic in
name. I think _findMinimumBy_ could be used by other parts of code,
while _findClosestBy_ is more clear naming for what it does now. But we
could ditch _findMinimumBy_ and just leave findClosestBy?

VariableVince e137fcaa6c Fix/Perf/Refactor: playerActions and buildableUnits, their callers and related types (#3220)
## Description:

TL;DR: it's faster.

buildableUnits is called via PlayerView.actions from UnitDisplay (each
tick without TileRef), BuildMenu (each tick when open), MainRadialMenu
(each tick when open), PlayerPanel (each tick when open),
StructureIconsLayer (when placing a building from build bar),
NukeTrajectoryPreviewLayer (when placing nuke, on tick when tile
changes), ClientGameRunner (on click to attack/auto-boat or hotkey B or
G).

After https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3213 got merged,
the change with largest impact in
https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3193 was done in such a
different way that a new PR was needed

The idea in 3193 was to not always ask for Transport Ship from
buildableUnits. In such a way that very little extra data was send to
the worker. This had the biggest impact on performance (the idea was
months older btw, see
https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/2295). Now, we do it the
other way around, by telling buildableUnits all unit types we want. Or
we want them all (undefined). The downside is more data is send in the
worker message. The upside is we have more options and can add more in
this PR.

This PR implements some of the leftovers in 3193 on top of 3213 and adds
further improvements.

(Some unrelated refactor/perf changes where moved out of this PR and
into already merged
https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3233,

- **GameRunner**, **WorkerMessages**: _playerActions_ and

specific building (units contains Unit Types).

- **GameRunner**: _playerActions_. fixes wrong assumption in PR 3213:
that only if units was undefined, we have to know canAttack.
ClientGameRunner wants to know both, in case of a click on non-bordering
land, to decide if it should auto-boat using a Transport Ship. So units
is not undefined (we only ask for Transport Ship now which has a
positive effect on performance for each click/tap) but we need canAttack
still.
Solved by removing the unit === undefined check before _canAttack_ in
_playerActions_.

- **GameRunner**, **GameView**, **WorkerClient**, **WorkerMessages**,
**Worker.worker**: added _playerBuildables_ / _buildables_ next to
existing _playerActions_ / _actions_. With above solved, there was still
no option to only get buildable units when the actions are not needed.
While **StructureIconsLayer**, **NukeTrajectoryPreviewLayer**,
**BuildMenu** and **UnitDisplay** need only that. To not make
playerActions more convoluted with more params or so, i've added a new
function _playerBuildables_ in **GameView** to only get buildable units
(**GameRunner** _playerBuildables_). _playerBuildables_ has 2 modes: get
all buildings (units undefined) or get specific buildings (units
contains Unit Types). Also update some comments that mentioned .actions
in **NukeTrajectoryPreviewLayer**.

- **ClientGameRunner**, **PlayerPanel**, **BuildMenu**, **UnitDisplay**,
**StructureIconsLayer** and **NukeTrajectoryPreviewLayer**: Since PR
3213, **StructureIconsLayer** and **NukeTrajectoryPreviewLayer** ask for
specific types of units from **GameView** _actions_ (**GameRunner**
playerActions). Now have the other files do the same. For example
**BuildMenu** asks for the new _BuildMenuTypes_ when it calls
._buildables_ and **ClientGameRunner** asks for UnitType.TransportShip
when sending a boat

- **ClientGameRunner**: canBoatAttack now accepts BuildableUnit[]
instead of PlayerActions so we can send it either actions.buildableUnits
or just buildables. Have functions call myPlayer.buildables(tileRef,
[UnitType.TransportShip]) when we only need a buildable unit and no
actions. Or myPlayer.actions(tileRef, null) when we need actions but no
buildable units. Or myPlayer.actions(tileRef, [UnitType.TransportShip])
when we need both actions, like canAttack, and a buildable unit. Then if
needed send either actions.buildableUnits or buildables to to
_canAutoBoat_ / _canBoatAttack_.

- **MainRadialMenu**: needs all player buildable unit types including
Transport Ship, so the _actions_ call argument for unit types can stay
undefined (unchanged) there.

- **MainRadialMenu**: now that **BuildMenu** uses _playerBuildables_
instead of _playerActions_, we must put data in
_this.buildMenu.playerBuildables_. And since we're not putting the
(unneeded) full _actions_ in there anymore, we can now put only the
needed and expected _actions._buildableUnits_ in it.

- **Game**, **PlayerImpl**, **StructureIconsLayer**: Typesafety and some
added perf: new type _PlayerBuildableUnitType_ (see also the below point
for how it is formed). So callers of _buildableUnits_ can never ask for
the wrong type like e.g. UnitType.Train because it doesn't return data
for that type. This type is now used in **PlayerImpl**, **BuildMenu**,
**RadialMenuElements**, **StructureDrawingUtils** and **UnitDisplay**
for that reason. And **InputHandler**, **StructureIconsLayer** and
**UIState** (little more on that in point below).

- **InputHandler**, **StructureIconsLayer**, **UIState**: In order to
make type safety work for GhostUnit.buildableUnit.type too (line ~217 of
StructureIconsLayer), changed type of interface _BuildableUnit_ to
_PlayerBuildableType_. Which is only more accurate. Same for and
this.structures and uiState.ghostStructure and with the latter,
_renderUnitItem_ in **UnitDisplay** and _setGhostStructure_ in
**InputHandler**. All Structures are of PlayerBuildableType (there are
even some in PlayerBuildables that aren't Structures, but it is much
more confined than UnitType).

- **Game**: Typesafety and some added perf: added _BuildMenus_ and
_BuildableAttacks_ in the same fashion that the existing StructureTypes
was already used (simplified it a bit too, with it renamed
_StructureTypes_ to _Structures_ and removed _isStructureType_). They
can be used with .types or .has(). _BuildableAttacks_.has() is used in
**RadialMenuElements**. _BuildableAttacks_ and existing _Structures_ now
make up _BuildMenus_. Which is used in **BuildMenu**,
**StructureIconsLayer** and **UnitDisplay**. Then _BuildMenus_ together
with UnitType.TransportShip make up the _PlayerBuildables_. Which is
used in **PlayerImpl** _buildableUnits_ (see point below). And with
_PlayerBuildableUnits_ we get the new _PlayerBuildableUnitType_ (see
above point on Game / PlayerImpl).

- **RadialMenuElements**: replace non-central ATTACK_UNIT_TYPES in
**RadialMenuElements** with centralized _BuildableAttackTypes_ too. Use
_PlayerBuildableUnitType_ for more type safety (can't by mistake add
UnitType.Train to its build menu). Make use of _BuildableAttackTypes_
instead of adding items hardcoded line by line in _getAllEnabledUnits_,
just like we already did since PR 3239 with _StructureTypes_. And use
_BuildableAttacks.types_ in the same fashion that existing
_isStructureTypes_ (now Structures.types) was already used elsewhere.

- **PlayerImpl**: _buildableUnits_
-- would do Object.values(UnitTypes) on every call. Now for better perf
directly loop over player buildable units by using _PlayerBuildables_
(see above point). In this way we also exclude MIRVWarhead, TradeShip,
Train, SamMissile and Shell so there are less unit types to loop through
by default. Since a player doesn't build those by themselves, they are
only build by Executions which use _canBuild_ directly and not
_buildableUnits_.
-- for more performance, do for loop instead of using .map and .filter,
no intermediate array needed nor callback overhead. We just loop over
the given units (which if undefined will contain _PlayerBuildables_).
Also pre-allocate the results array to get the most out of it, even if
V8 might already be very good at this.
-- cache config, railNetwork and inSpawnPhase so they can be re-used
inside the for loop.
-- cache cost inside the loop
-- it would check twice for tile!==null to decide to call
findUnitToUpgrade and canBuild. Now once.
-- eliminated double/triple checks for the same thing. It called
_findUnitToUpgrade_ (and with that _canUpgradeUnit_) and then _canBuild_
which both check if player has enough gold for the cost of the unit
type. And they both check if the unit type is disabled. Now we call
private functions _canBuildUnitType_, _canUpgradeUnitType_ to first do
checks on unit type level for early returns, and
_findExistingUnitToUpgrade_ to find existing unit without doing anything
extra. in a specific order to check everything only once. The public
functions _findUnitToUpgrade_ and _canBuild_ have an unchanged
functionality and we don't call them from _buildableUnits_ anymore.
-- would get _overlappingRailRoads_ and _computeGhostRailPaths_ when
canBuild was true. But this data is only meant for
**StructureIconsLayer** and it logically only uses it when placing a new
unit, not when upgrading one. Which is also commented on line 351 of
**StructureIconsLayer**. So, we now only get overlapping railroads and
ghost rails if we're not hovering to upgrade an existing unit.

- **PlayerImpl**: _findUnitToUpgrade_: unchanged functionality, but have
it call new private function _findExistingUnitToUpgrade_ to find
existing unit.

- **PlayerImpl**: _canBuild_: unchanged functionality, but have it call
new private function _canBuildUnitType_ to do the checks it first did
itself. And then new private function _canSpawnUnitType_ for the rest of
the checks. This way we can call _canBuildUnitType_ and
_canSpawnUnitType_ from _buildableUnits_ in a specific order to prevent
double/triple checks.

- **PlayerImpl**: _canBuildUnitType_: new private function to be shared
by _buildableUnits_, _canBuild_ and _canUpgradeUnit_ to be able do unit
type level checks in a specific order to prevent double/triple checks.
Via parameter knownCost, _buildableUnits_ can send it the cost it
already fetched so that it doesn't have to be fetched again. For caller
_canUpgradeUnit_, the isAlive() check (which was previously only done in
canBuild) is new but harmless, maybe even better to have also check
isAlive() on upgrade now that Nations are also upgrading which might
prevent some edge case bugs.

- **PlayerImpl**: _canUpgradeUnitType_: new private function to be
shared by _buildableUnits_ and _canUpgradeUnit_ to be able do unit type
level checks in a specific order to prevent double/triple checks.

- **PlayerImpl**: _canSpawnUnitType_: new private function to be shared
by _buildableUnits_ and _canBuildUnit_ to be able do unit type level
checks in a specific order to prevent double/triple checks.

- **PlayerImpl**: _findExistingUnitToUpgrade_: new private function to
be shared by _buildableUnits_ and _findUnitToUpgrade_ to be able do unit
level checks in a specific order to prevent double/triple checks.

- **PlayerImpl**: _isUnitValidToUpgrade_: new private function to be
shared by _buildableUnits_ and _canUpgradeUnit_ to be able do unit level
checks in a specific order to prevent double/triple checks.

- **PlayerImpl.test.ts**: because of the isAlive() check in which is new
for _canUpgradeUnit_ (see above at _canBuildUnitType_), the tests needed
to have the players be alive at the start, in order to pass.

- **BuildMenu**: use .find instead of .filter in canBuildOrUpgrade, a
function we already needed to change. This is faster and prevents an
allocation.

**PERFORMANCE**
As for calling ._buildables_ instead of unnecessarily getting
._actions_, there is an obvious win because there's less to send
calculate and recieve.

Also asking for only the needed buildings helps a lot (especially if
TradeShip isn't needed, see the difference in benchmark in original
#3193).

But the real-world impact is hard to measure. gave it a try in #3193 and
those results should be even better now.

Now testing only _buildableUnits_ performance in a synthetic benchmark,
we get these results. This is after other performance improvments so the
base is already better than it was in original #3193:

**BEFORE** (only buildableUnits itself)

scamiv 9fc11b7b9a perf(worker): remove heartbeat; batch game updates (#3308)
## Description:
Removes the client-driven heartbeat loop and switches worker tick
execution to a worker-owned drain scheduler with batched game update
delivery.

## Why
The previous flow required the client to send a `heartbeat` every
animation frame just to keep the worker progressing turns. That had two
costs:

1. Simulation progress was coupled to browser frame cadence.
2. Catch-up periods produced many single `game_update` messages,
increasing message overhead and main-thread wakeups.

## What Changed

### 1) Remove heartbeat protocol
- Deleted `heartbeat` from `WorkerMessageType`.
- Removed `HeartbeatMessage` from `MainThreadMessage`.
- Removed `sendHeartbeat()` from `WorkerClient`.
- Removed the `requestAnimationFrame` keep-alive loop in
`ClientGameRunner`.

Files:
- `src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts`
- `src/core/worker/WorkerClient.ts`
- `src/core/worker/WorkerMessages.ts`
- `src/core/worker/Worker.worker.ts`

### 2) Add batched worker-to-client updates
- Added `game_update_batch` message type and `GameUpdateBatchMessage`.
- Worker now emits one batch message containing multiple tick updates.
- `WorkerClient` handles `game_update_batch` by replaying updates to the
existing callback in order.

Files:
- `src/core/worker/WorkerMessages.ts`
- `src/core/worker/WorkerClient.ts`

### 3) Move tick draining into worker
- Added a scheduler (`scheduleDrain`) and drain loop (`drain`) in
`Worker.worker.ts`.
- On each `turn` message, worker enqueues turn and schedules drain.
- Drain executes up to `MAX_TICKS_BEFORE_YIELD = 4` ticks per cycle,
then yields with `setTimeout(..., 0)`.
- Tick updates are collected into a batch and sent once with
transferables:
  - `packedTileUpdates.buffer`
  - `packedMotionPlans.buffer` (when present)
- If backlog remains, drain reschedules itself.

File:
- `src/core/worker/Worker.worker.ts`

## Behavioral Notes
- No server protocol changes.
- Ggame update callback contract remains the same (still receives one
`GameUpdateViewData` at a time in order).
- Ordering is preserved: `WorkerClient` iterates batch entries in
sequence.
- Error updates are still filtered from update delivery in the worker
batch path (same effective behavior as before for normal update flow).

## Expected Impact
- Fewer `postMessage` calls during backlog and burst turn delivery.
- Lower message overhead and fewer main-thread interrupts.
- Less dependence on UI frame timing for worker progress.
- Better catch-up stability due to explicit periodic yielding.

## Risk Areas
- Drain scheduling edge cases (re-entrancy / lost wake-ups).
- Mitigated with `drainScheduled`, `draining`, and `drainRequested`
flags.
- Larger per-message payloads due to batching.
  - Bounded by `MAX_TICKS_BEFORE_YIELD`.
- Any assumptions in downstream code about receiving only `game_update`.
  - Handled by adding `game_update_batch` support in `WorkerClient`.

VariableVince 444aa16ac8 Fix: less console warn spam on each attack-click (#3262)
## Description:

Rabbit suggestion to move console warn for not being able to send boat
to doBoatAttackUnderCursor and remove it from canBoatAttack.

On each attack-click on land, if that land is own land or ally and
canAttack is false, it will check canAutoBoat. Even if user had no
intention to attack, there would be a warning that no boat could be
send. Now only do that warning when user actually intended to send a
boat using hotkey G which calls doBoatAttackUnderCursor.

VariableVince f1cd478970 Cleanup/refactor: Remove some redundant checks (#3235)
## Description:

PR 3/x in effort to break up PR
https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3220. Follows on already
merged https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3233 and
https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO/pull/3234.

Please see if these can be merged for v30.

- **ClientGameRunner**: removed two redundant myPlayer===null checks
since that was already done right above, instead use !.
- **BuildMenu**: just like in UnitDisplay, assign public PlayerActions
default value of null. So that in canCreateOrBuild, where we already do
a === null check on it btw, we can safely skip the assignment to const
buildableUnits and just directly loop over
this.playerActions.buildableUnits.
- **RadialMenuElements**: don't call canBuildOrUpgrade 3x in
CreateMenuElements for the .map on flattenedBuildTable, instead do it
once and re-use outcome.

Evan 900cc89067 Better username censoring (#3122)
## Description:

Many inapropriate names bypass the current filter. This PR does the
following:

1. Moves name censoring to server side so inappropriate names are
scrubbed before being sent to the client
2. Requests a list of profane words from the api, this allows us to
quickly add new profane words in the admin panel without having to
redeploy.

Arkadiusz Sygulski 18fb513326 Pathfinding refinements (#2959)
## Description:

### Short path for multi-source HPA*

Math was not mathing, increased the bounds to 260x260, it is a bit
slower but should work better. The short path was breaking when player
owned a lot of shores. This is because the bounding box of tiles with
less than 120 distance + 10 padding could be as big as 260x260 and the
optimized array was set to 140x140. I made mistake of calculating it as
`2 * (60 + 10)` instead of `2 * (120 + 10)`.

### LoS path refinement

Previously, we ran 2 passes of LoS smoothing on the path. However, since
we are effectively tracing the same path, the line of sight is
essentially the same. This PR makes second line of sight stop on water
tiles with magnitude `n + 1` compared to first path. Practically, this
means it'll attempt LoS exactly 1 tile after previous corner. See
screenshot.

<img width="1299" height="1151" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/726be236-1ff8-406c-896a-02902a762ab0"
/>

### SendBoatAttackIntentEvent

The flow of sending transport ships is currently strange. This PR makes
the flow more sane.

**Old flow**
```
- Player clicks TARGET tile, it can be deep inland
- Client asks Worker for the best START tile to TARGET tile
- Worker answers `false`, since the tile is inland
- Client sends BoatAttackIntent with START=false and TARGET tiles set
- Worker accepts BoatAttackIntent, computes DESTINATION as closest shore to TARGET
- Worker re-computes best START to DESTINATION
- Worker sends boat from START to DESTINATION
```

**New flow**
```
- Player clicks TARGET tile, it can be deep inland
- Client sends BoatAttackIntent with TARGET
- Worker accepts BoatAttackIntent, computes DESTINATION as closest shore to TARGET
- Worker computes START as the best tile to DESTINATION
- Worker sends boat from START to DESTINATION
```

YoussfeCantCode 1c52d20e83 Added pause functionality for private multiplayer games (#2657)
If this PR fixes an issue, link it below. If not, delete these two
lines.
Resolves #2491

## Description:
Adds pause/unpause functionality for private multiplayer games. Only the
lobby creator can pause the game, and all players see a pause overlay
when the game is paused.

  **Key features:**
- Lobby creator sees pause/play button in control panel (alongside
existing singleplayer/replay controls)
  - Server validates that only lobby creator can toggle pause
  - All players see "Game paused by Lobby Creator" overlay when paused
  - Game state freezes (no turn execution) while paused
  - Unpause resumes normal gameplay

  **Implementation details:**
- Server-side pause state (`isPaused`) prevents turn execution during
pause
- Each client receives `isLobbyCreator` flag in `GameStartInfo` to
show/hide pause button
- Added `TogglePauseIntent` that broadcasts to all clients via
`NoOpExecution`
